E109: Plant Signals — What Your Flowering Edible Plants Are Telling You
Episode 109 - listen here!
After weeks apart, Dave and Maggie are back together for this episode! They spend the first 20 minutes of the show catching up on their own gardens. Maggie shares what she’s learned from her neighbour’s garden, her new improved watering approach and using straw mulch. Dave shares about his new and improved deer fence, the unusual root veggie he’s growing for the first time, and the incredible wildlife in his yard that he’s been able to capture on his trail cam. Both co-hosts share about their incredible garlic patches, which seem to be having their best year!
Dave also sheds some light on why native ladybugs for release are no longer accessible to garden centres across North America (20mins 22secs).
Maggie’s Fav Thing: Romanesco Zucchini
Dave’s Fav Thing: Maltese Cross Perennial Flower
Question of the Week: A listener is wondering about blossom end rot on their San Marzano tomatoes. Dave explains why this tends to happen to paste/Roma-type tomatoes vs. cherry tomatoes and whether there’s anything you can do to avoid it.
This week’s topic covers flowering vegetables and what signals to look for when your edibles start to bloom.
We cover:
Herbs — To trim or not to trim? The difference between annual herb blooms and perennial.
Tomatoes — What “megablooms” (multiple/triple blooms) mean.
Squash — What to do if your plants are blooming but not developing fruit.
Potatoes — If flowering indicates times to harvest.
Garlic Scapes — What exactly scapes are and how long after they appear garlic should be harvested.
